Sha Fa Noodle Roll locates in the
mid-west area of Tainan City. This is an area where you can also find a lot of public
arts in the little quaint lanes.
Rice noodle roll is a traditional cuisine in Southern China and some parts of South East Asia. It’s made of rice milk, and usually served with sweet soy sauce, red meat, seafood, and spout.
Sha Fa Noodle Roll offers different combinations: noodle rolls with white sesame topping, egg paste topping, spout topping, or Youtiao. With the stuff, you can choose from beef, Char siu, pork, or shrimp. When the noodle roll is served, waiter (or probably the owner, they don’t hire waiters I guest), pour hot sweet sauce from a tin pot to the dish, making the roll hotter and stickier. Besides noodle rolls, it also serves spicy fried noodles, Za-Sui noodles (noodles with chopped animal organs), and Wonton soup. Each dish costs from TWD50-100.
Although it emphasize “Hong Kong”, the taste is somehow mixed with the typical Tainan sweet flavour. My personal favourite is the beef noodle roll without any topping.
One of the critiques once says you don’t find a lot of surprise in the restaurants in Hong Kong. What you pay is what you get. However, this is not the case in Taiwan. You may find horrible food in expensive restaurants, but super high quality dishes in ordinary delis. From this point, Sha Fa Noodle Roll is very Hong Kong. Good food but does not exceed peoples’ expectation on the money spent. Even the owners aren't that passionate compare with other local shops.
Overall, a very straight-forward little restaurant with attitudes- I like it.
